Yes. That should work. So here is my conclusion:

1. A solution for impaired browsers is possible provided they
   implement the altimg attribute, but since that is part of
   the MathML standard it is not clear how widely this is likely
   to be done.

2. I still want to defer the effort until we understand better
   whether it is actually needed in practice.
