  It insures that ALL browers (not just the main ones) have SOMETHING
that they
  can display for it, MathML support or no.

  And because it gives you something to hang the alt tag on.
  (So that screen readers can find it without inflicting its content on
  those that can deal with the image better.)

  Unrelated to the current discussion, I see that migration as the right
direction
  philosophicly, if possibly problematic practicly.
