When I first read your comment, I misunderstood you to say "replace the
mathml with an image". Now that I read more carefully, you are
absolutely right.

Since all of the mainstream browsers now support MathML (either directly
or with free plugins), what is the advantage of generating the image?
Doing so won't remove the need to migrate from HTML to XHTML.
