Sorry I should have investigated further, AFAICT this stage doesn't need
to happen on i386 at the moment and I can just run the image before
it's merged.  I didn't realise and thought that the only way to have a
running kernel was to do this merge stage.  I.e. I'm just running:

  make BUILD/i386-unknown-coyotos/mkimage.out
  coyqemu -g BUILD/i386-unknown-coyotos/mkimage.out

A print of message_buffer+0x800 now shows "hello, world" making it
through to the kernel as I'd expect.
