I would take the hard disk out of the machine and mount it as a secondary
on another machine for analysis.
If the record is in a known disk location, it wouldn't be all that hard to
read it.

Yes. A 'mis-arranged initial system image' is what I meant with 'bad
system specification'.
Does mkimage check for syntax errors ?
