Why recurse at all?  One can configure Jam/MR, SCons, and even lowly GNU
Make to build entire projects larger and more complicated than Coyotos
without recursion.  Such configurations more fully take advantage of
distributed compilation as well.

You could do far worse than spending a day investigating SCons:
